Eating well

Sugar & fat

Foods that are high in sugar or fat (or both) include butter, cream, oils and dressings, chocolate, puddings, biscuits, pastries and cakes, crisps, ice cream and fizzy drinks.

Sugary and fatty foods and sugary drinks don't provide many nutrients but are high in calories, which means they are likely to make you put on weight and contribute to tooth decay, so try to limit your intake.

Saturated fat can also increase your cholesterol level and the chance of developing heart disease so where possible, switch to foods rich in unsaturated fat. For example, you could swap butter for low fat spread.
