Food dos and donts

Caffeine

High levels of caffeine can result in babies with low birth weights, which can increase the risk of health problems in later life. Too much caffeine can also cause miscarriage.

Caffeine is naturally found in lots of foods, such as coffee, tea and chocolate, and is added to some soft drinks and energy drinks. Some cold and flu remedies also contain caffeine, so talk to your midwife, doctor or pharmacist before taking them.

You don't need to cut out caffeine completely, but try not to have more than 200mg a day. Here's a quick guide to help you:

  • Mug of coffee: 100mg (instant) / 140mg (filter)
  • Mug of tea: 75mg
  • Can of drink: 40mg (cola) / 80mg (energy drink)
  • 50g bar of chocolate: 25mg (milk) / 50mg (plain)

Don't worry if you do occasionally have more – the risks are small. To cut down, try decaffeinated tea and coffee, fruit juice or mineral water.
